The Lincolnshire village of Tetford, in the civil parish of East Lindsay, is situated some 7 miles north-east of Horncastle and 10 miles south of Louth. It boasts a long history, being recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as Tesforde, and had an ancient mill on the site of the present-day 17th century watermill in the village centre. It is surrounded by beautiful Lincolnshire Wolds countryside which it used to good effect on Thursday 4th March 1841 when it held its solitary race meeting. However, the 3-mile race over very heavy hunting ground on the edge of Tetford, with some tremendously demanding leaps, proved to be a desperate affair. Mischief led early but fell at a wall, leaving Myrtle and The Colonel to do battle up front. Both in their turn fell on at least one occasion and after 12 minutes of racing The Colonel got home by a length. Both horses came in much distressed, and their riders were each bleeding copiously from their falls and having each lost their caps. Needless to say, there is no further evidence of a steeplechase taking place in Tetford. |
